Intuitive Breathwork Masterclass
Where science meets
somatic intelligence.
Step into a live and virtual masterclass that blends neuroscience, somatic education, and practitioner experience. Designed for mental health and healthcare professionals, this training provides a research informed overview of breathwork, autonomic physiology, and mind-body patterns. Through lecture, discussion, and guided demonstrations, participants explore how different breathing approaches are described in the scientific literature and how these concepts relate to nervous system function in educational and wellness contexts.
A closer look.
This masterclass presents breathwork through a research informed and accessible educational framework. Participants explore the science of breathing and autonomic physiology while observing guided demonstrations that illustrate key concepts discussed in the training. The program is designed to expand professional understanding of breathwork literature and support deeper awareness of how different breathing patterns are described in scientific and somatic research.
Learning Objectives
Describe
How breathwork influences the body and brain through autonomic nervous system pathways.
Explain
How research describes associations between breathing patterns, stress physiology, and emotional awareness.
Compare
Common breathwork methods and the physiological responses described in research.
Observe
Simple breathing patterns as part of an educational overview of how different techniques are described in research.
Evaluate
Research findings on breathwork and discuss how studies describe physiological and experiential associations.
Recognize
Professional boundaries and ethical considerations when sharing breathwork education in one’s role.
Meet Your Practitioner
Kia Burns is a certified Somatic Breathwork practitioner and trauma informed facilitator. She previously served as a Survivor Advocate at the Rape Recovery Center, where she provided crisis support and education for individuals during the forensic exam process. Today, she integrates science, somatic practices, and lived experience to create supportive learning environments for self regulation and nervous system awareness. Kia’s teaching style blends clarity with compassion, offering mental health and healthcare professionals an evidence based educational experience with practical tools that promote resilience and professional well-being.

Agenda & Curriculum
-
This section provides an educational overview of how breathwork is described in scientific and somatic literature related to autonomic physiology. Participants explore how various breathing patterns are associated with changes in parasympathetic and sympathetic activity, while key concepts such as vagus nerve pathways, heart rate variability, baroreflex function, and diaphragmatic mechanics are explained in clear, accessible terms. The section also outlines commonly referenced indicators of autonomic activation and state shifts, offering professionals a research informed framework for understanding how breath patterns are discussed in relation to stress physiology.
-
This section traces the evolution of breathwork from its ancient roots in practices such as Pranayama to its appearance in contemporary wellness contexts. Participants explore four widely recognized approaches: Box Breathing, Nadi Shodhana, Holotropic Breathwork, and the Wim Hof Method, while reviewing their historical background and the research that describes them. Each method is presented in terms of how it is discussed in scientific and somatic literature, offering professionals a broad, research informed overview of traditional and modern breathwork frameworks.
-
This section provides an educational overview of how structured breathwork experiences are commonly described in wellness and somatic literature. Participants review conceptual phases frequently referenced in these discussions such as preparation, active breathing periods, breath holds, and the transition back to baseline. The section also outlines physiological responses that are often noted in research and practitioner reports, including sensations like tingling, temperature changes, muscle activation shifts, and tremors. Additionally, general considerations referenced in the literature are presented to support a research informed understanding of how different breath patterns are discussed across various phases of practice.
-
This section reviews how stress and heightened activation are discussed in neuroscience and physiological research, including changes in autonomic activity, muscle tension, and breath patterns. Key brain regions involved in stress responses are introduced to show how these patterns appear in scientific studies. The section also touches on intergenerational and epigenetic research, along with how breathwork is referenced in academic and somatic literature in relation to autonomic activity in non clinical contexts.
-
This section reviews how research often describes emotional states alongside physical sensations such as shifts in muscle tension, breath patterns, posture, or temperature. Participants explore commonly referenced physiological cues and how these observations appear in studies on autonomic activation and interoceptive awareness, offering an educational overview of the connection between emotion and bodily sensation.
-
This section introduces the Reset, a brief breathing pattern demonstration that highlights how ventilation changes correspond with autonomic responses. Participants observe each phase of the demonstration to build familiarity with explaining the sequence.
-
This section offers an open Q&A where participants can review and clarify concepts from the research, physiology, and educational demonstrations presented in the program.
-
This masterclass concludes with an optional 60 minute guided breathwork session led by Kia Burns. Participants who choose to participate can move through the sequence as a direct experience, observing the structure, pacing, and breath patterns discussed throughout the course.
