Meet Your Practitioner

Kia Burns is a certified Somatic Breathwork practitioner and trauma-informed facilitator. She previously served as a Survivor Advocate at the Rape Recovery Center, where she supported individuals navigating the aftermath of trauma and forensic exam. Today, she integrates science, somatic practices, and lived experience to create safe, impactful spaces for healing. Kia’s teaching style blends clarity with compassion, offering mental health and healthcare professionals a science-backed curriculum with practical tools they can confidently bring into their work.

Agenda & Curriculum

  • This section explores how breathwork influences the autonomic nervous system and overall regulation of the body. Participants will learn how different breathing patterns engage the parasympathetic system (rest, digest, recover) and the sympathetic system (fight, flight, freeze, appease). Key mechanisms such as vagus nerve stimulation, heart rate variability, baroreflex sensitivity, and diaphragmatic breathing are explained in accessible terms, highlighting their role in reducing stress and improving resilience. The section also outlines signs of regulated versus dysregulated nervous system states, giving professionals a science-backed framework for applying breathwork in therapeutic practice.

  • This section traces the evolution of breathwork from its ancient roots in practices like Pranayama through its integration into modern psychotherapy and wellness approaches. Participants will explore four core techniques such as: Box Breathing, Nadi Shodhana, Holotropic Breathwork, and the Wim Hof Method. Each method is presented with its applications, benefits, and supporting research. The discussion highlights how these methods regulate the nervous system, reduce stress, and build resilience, giving professionals a broad understanding of both traditional and contemporary approaches.

  • This section outlines the framework of a complete breathwork session, guiding participants through preparation, activation, breath retention, regulation, and integration. It explains common physiological responses such as tetany, tremors, and thermoregulation, along with the rebound effect that shifts the body from sympathetic arousal back into parasympathetic calm. Safety considerations, including asthma and other contraindications, are emphasized to ensure ethical facilitation. The section equips professionals with a clear, step-by-step structure for supporting clients through both the intensity and release of the breathwork.

  • This section explains how trauma is held in the body through nervous system dysregulation and changes in brain function. It highlights the roles of the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex in shaping “body memories,” and introduces research on epigenetic changes across generations, such as Holocaust and 9/11 studies. Participants will learn how breathwork can safely access limbic memories, facilitate release, and support emotional integration. The section draws on polyvagal theory and somatic experiencing to provide professionals with science-backed insights for addressing unresolved trauma.

  • This section maps how emotions show up as distinct physical sensations in the body such as tightness in the chest with grief, heat in the face with anger, or heaviness in the stomach with guilt. It also highlights positive states like joy, love, and peace, which carry their own somatic signatures. By linking emotional experiences to observable patterns in posture, breath, and physical response, participants gain practical tools for recognizing and validating client experiences. The section integrates insights from somatic therapy, polyvagal theory, and trauma research to strengthen therapeutic application.

  • This section presents a short, practical breathwork sequence designed to quickly restore nervous system balance. The 10–15 minute protocol includes diaphragmatic breathing to surface tension, a brief breath hold for recalibration, and slow nasal breathing to anchor calm. Participants will learn how this structured reset supports parasympathetic activation, reduces stress, and creates a grounded sense of safety. The Reset offers professionals a reliable tool for both personal practice and therapeutic application.

  • This section provides a live demonstration of core breathwork techniques, including The Reset, followed by structured partner facilitation. Participants will observe proper guidance, then practice in pairs to build skill, confidence, and clarity in applying the methods. The focus is on translating theory into safe, hands-on experience so professionals leave equipped to integrate these practices effectively in their own work

  • This section creates space for open dialogue, allowing participants to clarify concepts, explore challenges, and deepen their understanding of breathwork applications. It ensures that professionals leave with confidence in both the science and the practice, while also addressing ethical considerations and practical adaptations for diverse client needs.

  • This section concludes the training with a full, facilitated breathwork experience led by Kia Burns. Participants are guided through every phase; From preparation to integration, allowing them to embody the process firsthand. Experiencing the work in its entirety not only demonstrates the therapeutic potential of breathwork but also equips professionals with the insight and confidence to model facilitation in their own practice.
